Youngjoo Julia Lee

Youngjoo Julia Lee is an up and coming jazz artist hailing from South Korea.  She started her musical career in classical violin and voice.  Her interest in jazz sparked when she listened to albums by Ella Fitzgerald, Chick Corea, Keith Jarett, Brad Mehldau, Chet Baker, and Sarah Vaughan.  After several years of training and performing in South Korea, she moved to the United States for further training.

 

She spent the first two years in the United States performing in Kansas City, MO at venues like The Mutual Musicians Foundation.  In 2006, she moved to Boston, MA to attend Berklee College of Music and then New England Conservatory.  At these two world-renowned music institutions, she studied with famous jazz performers and educators such as Dominique Eade, Ran Blake, Jerry Bergonzi, John McNeil, John Lockwood, Bob Stoloff, Ken Schaphorst, Lisa Thorson, Rhiannon, Daniela Schächter, Frank Carlberg, Jeannette Lovetri, Kate McGarry, and Brian Levy.

Youngjoo actively performs in South Korea and the United States.  Lately, she shared the stage with Grammy award-winning musician Luciana Souza and was invited by John Zorn to perform in his 35 year retrospective concert at New England Conservatory (Boston, MA) and the Stone (New York, NY).  She was chosen to work with Dave Holland in a concert featuring his music. 

 

Besides performing, Youngjoo teaches music at Chugye University for the Arts and Suwon Science College as a part-time faculty member.

Also, she is an avid composer and music entrepreneur.  

 

She plans to release her first album in 2016.
